Did you know that birdsong begins at 4 a.m.? You may not be up early enough to hear it, but birds do not wait for dawn to begin their chorus. They actually sing the day awake. If you think about the churning of the earth, there’s this steady song that’s in constant motion, a rippling wave, wrapping itself around the planet, calling forth the light.

This morning, I took a walk with my friend, Bailey, as we are wont to do a few times each week when we don’t want to do gym and need to get our heads on straight. Even though today is at the end of July, which you think of as the heart of summer, the morning had a coolness in the breeze that felt downright unseasonal. In the shade, as the wind whipped around buildings and through grasses, it caused my skin to raise up and prickle. One thought kept whispering through my mind like that wind…autumn. soon.

The movement of seasons and change begins much more slowly than we think. Just like pre-dawn birdsong, shifts begin before we are even able to perceive them.

Last week, I cleaned out and re-organized my tupperware cabinet. I wasn’t thinking about anything in particular at the time, except that I thought it would be a nice thing to do while I listened to one of my favorite podcasts and it needed getting done.

Later that night, I wrote something I rather liked, had been thinking about in the back of my mind for a while, but didn’t really know how to start.

If you meditated for a while, what wheels of change are beginning to churn inside you? What story is unfolding now, even without your forceful spinning of the thread?
